Swamp

I don’t think that drain the swamp was a good analogy. However, I must admit that it was an effective one. People got a visual, it was catchy and people responded to it.

It should be a dumb one.

Yet a swamp is not a wasteland. It’s a rich ecosystem. Not a great place for humans to live, but it is like paradise for the animals that live there. Plenty of water and food.

And humans actually need swamps. (Confession: I am getting this from the kids show The Magic School Bus). Swamps act like a natural filter for our water.

It is not surprising I guess that a b usiness man would think to drain it. For them, it is land that they cannot build on. They cannot sell. Many swamps and lowlands were filled in so that people could develop it and make some money.

So maybe it was a good analogy after all.

With the millionaire businessmen he is appointing for his cabinet and the deals he is making, and the businesses he is not divesting, he is trying to get rid of politicians for the sole purpose of making himself money.

Government is messy and stinky. But it is not a Corporatocracy.

Thanks Obama!

The truth of the matter is that Obama did not require health insurance because he wanted your freedom or to turn us into socialists. It was because of the coverage of preexisting illnesses. Otherwise people would not pay for the insurance until they got sick and then sign up for insurance. That is not a sustainable plan.

BOOK CONTESTS

Amazon has a new giveaway option for physical products, like print books. Scroll down toward the bottom of the product page to find this option.

Update: KDP authors can now run Amazon Giveaways for e-books, too.

Goodreads also has an option for authors to give away free books.

I’ve run several Goodreads giveaways and I’ve also run four Amazon Giveaways to give free print books away.

Here is how the two giveaway programs compare:

COST

Goodreads giveaways win when it comes to the author’s cost:

  • At Goodreads, you can order author copies directly then ship them yourself with the cheapest shipping method available (economical if you restrict the winners to your own country). If you live in the US, you can also ship to US addresses via media mail. (It may be even more economical to drop-ship directly to the customer, rather than order…

Winning Short Story – Tell Me to Go by Thomas Cannon

This was a great opportunity to have my story performed. The performer jazzed it up and did a great job!

Novel Writing Festival

Performed by Hugh Ritchie

Get to know the writer:

What is your short story about?

A naïve young man does not realize that his girlfriend is trying to get him to break up with her. She has most likely cheated on him, but his passivity is also to blame for their problems.

Why should this story be read by people?

It is a mainstream flash fiction story.

How would you describe this story in two words?

Paralytic naivety

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

I love the Fisher King. With Jeff Bridges as a shock jock trying to find redemption and Robin Williams as a homeless person on a quest to find the Holy Grail, it is packed with humor and dramatic scenes.

How long have you been working on this story?

This is a story I wrote 20 years ago. Every so often I pull…

The Jerk in the Mirror

People vote for who we see in the mirror. This is a comment a coworker said the day after Trump was elected. This appears to have a ton of wisdom in it. The truth of this may be too true.
Trump is an angry man that is thin skinned and attacks without thought to decorum. This person is reactionary with the absolute belief that he knows best. People are trying to figure out how he got elected. How his tactics work.
The answer is look around you. Look at you. We have become a nation of road ragers and trolling internet comment makers. We….let’s be clear WE love to get into it on Facebook and post things just to get under people’s skins.
In our defense, we are good people and in our hearts we are gentle. We are loud because the whole room is shouting. And the thing of it is, we worry about the manners of the youth. How they do not have any social skills. Which sure seems accurate. But perhaps we are singling them out when they are just one of us.
We elected a reality star. Because we love those sons-a-bitches. Back-stabbing and hair-pulling fights really puts a kink in our collective pants.
Do I have a point? Not really. Because I am really angry. Because I am choosing sides. I do not think a Democrat could get elected this way. I can’t think of one that wants to while I can think of many Republicans that tried.
Trump might be many things to this country. He might be its destroyer. Typically, I believe in balance and he might cause a swing back to a reining in of just saying whatever you want
However, he might be the validator for vitriol. This is dangerous. Especially for those people targeted for hate already. But he is not creating a wave of egocentric callousness. He is is just riding the crest of one.

Vote for Yourself

People vote for who we see in the mirror. This is a comment a coworker said the day after Trump was elected and I keep coming back to it with expanding connotations.

We elected a reality star. Because we love those sons-a-bitches. Back-stabbing and hair-pulling fights really puts a kink in our collective pants.

Replace previous paragraph with this one?
I am not objective. I do not believe that a democrat could or would get elected by making fun of a handicapped reporter. However, I suspect we elected Barack Obama because he had the right slogan (Obama turned out to be a great leader).
Trump might be many things to this country. He might be its destroyer. Typically, I believe in balance and he might cause a swing back to a reining in of just saying whatever you want. As much as good as bad comes of events.
However, he might be the validator for vitriol. This is dangerous. Especially for those people targeted for hate already. But he is not creating a wave of ego-eccentric callousness. He is is just riding the crest of one created by conservative and liberal alike.

NO FEE Submission call + editor interview —— Lost Sparrow Press, DEADLINE: Jan. 31, 2017

I submitted to this press. A small thing but I really liked that you can submit 4 poems and upload them separately. That way you do not need to paste them together in a document first.

Trish Hopkinson

lspLost Sparrow Press is a new small independent press recently founded by publisher/editor, Logan R. This new indie press will focus on poetry, literary, and art publications and is “dedicated to the vast world of humanity and the many differences therein.”

I wondered how and why this press came to be, so I asked him a few questions to find out. See my interview with Logan and a link to their submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Lost Sparrow Press.

LOGAN: We are a small press just starting out, though we do have big dreams. The idea started with me and now I’ve got some great folks on board, but we are still working out the roles for everyone.

As a press we are focused on being a place for the poet and artist still lurking in the shadows to be heard. We are going to publish well-crafted, engaging…

It’s time to relax Part II

What is here is staying here. You could go back and outlaw marriage. Outlaw abortion. These things will not go away.

And you will not be the worse for it. Or our nation. Religion is good, but it did not keep our country together. Our framework and our education did. We have a good system of government that protected people’s rights to a greater extent than other forms of government. Our education has always instilled values and skills to be a good citizen.

Hopefully that will be enough.

Meantime, our culture has developed. People can be gay or transgender They always have been and will always be.

And if you relax, you will find it does not affect you. You are angry because you want to be angry.

You have more reason to be angry over abortions. However, they are not going away either. So take your anger and direct to things that are causing more deaths. Catholics pushing no birth control in Africa, for example.

Ask yourself why you are so angry over abortion and not wars where babies are killed and maimed? Is it because uppity women are the ones getting the abortions?

Because you do not believe that abortions will not happen with the reversal of roe v wade.

Instead of getting so worked up, relax. Work on being a peaceful, warm person and things will fall into place. My side needs to do the same. Trump and the republicans will do things I do not approve of, but it will not be Armageddon.

Our good way of life will continue.
